By full name George Islay MacNeill Robertson, Baron Robertson of Port Ellen, KT, GCMG, PC, FRSA, FRSE, was the Secretary General of NATO from 1999 to 2003. He has been a member of the Labour Party since 1963, where he served, among other things, as Chairman of the Scottish Council of the Labour Party. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he was Shadow Secretary for Scottish Affairs, Defence and Foreign Affairs. In 1997, he was appointed UK Defense Secretary. He was one of the first Western politicians to call Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic a war criminal. After leaving NATO, Lord Robertson has pursued a private career.
